Cape Girardeau takes leadership role in Knowledge Base

The Novalis Knowledge treatment database is provided to help centers streamline and optimize Shaped Beam Surgery Planning. It is exclusively for Novalis users, and allows them to search through a wide variety of radiosurgery cases that have been treated by experienced specialists at Novalis Centers worldwide. Easy accessibility allows quick comparisons between real cases including patient data, images, treatment plans, follow-up data, etc.

Southeast Missouri Hospital became a test site for new software for the Knowledge Base in late 2006.

In the fall of 2005, Southeast Missouri Hospital's Novalis Center earned a visit from Carston Raupach of Brain Lab. He traveled to Cape Girardeau from Germany.

Cape Girardeau was one of only four sites Raupach visited on his trip. The other sites were in Canada, Florida and Denver.

"I'm here to talk about the Knowledge Base, which is a platform for Brain Lab to share standard treatment planning," he said. "I want to talk to some of the sites about possible other uses of the Knowledge Base. We are working to extend the knowledge base which should improve the quality of treatment for all Novalis Centers."

Raupach spoke highly of the doctors, nurses and staff associated with Southeast's Novalis Center. "People here are just so nice and knowledgable," he said. "I've really enjoyed my first visit to Missouri."

Cape Girardeau Neursurgeon Scott Gibbs, M.D., left, visits with Carston Raupach of Brain Lab from Germany.

Neurosurgeon Scott Gibbs, M.D., said of Raupach's visit, "Brain Lab's interest in our Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery Team is a real honor and distinction. This meeting created an opportunity for our team to take a leadership role in the formation of an international database for Novalis Radiosurgery Centers around the world."
