What is Novalis?

As downstate Missouri’s leader in cancer care, Southeast continually strives to bring the most current services and technology to the region. Southeast is the first hospital in Missouri and one of fewer than 60 worldwide to offer Novalis® Shaped Beam SurgeryTM manufactured by BrainLAB. Novalis offers cutting-edge technology for highly precise radiation treatments of brain, head and neck tumors, arteriovenous malformations, prostate cancer and certain functional neurological disorders.
Novalis is the first device to combine the benefits of stereotactic radiosurgery, 3D conformal radiotherapy and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in a single platform designed for both intracranial and extracranial treatments. For intracranial radiosurgery, Novalis has the ability to deliver a more conformal dose of radiation to irregularly-shaped lesions with greater accuracy and uniformity than ever before, using either circular beams or dynamic beam shaping.   Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery

Novalis features image-guided radiosurgery technology for high precision treatment of various body targets allowing physicians to localize tumors with sub-millimeter accuracy. Typically performed on an outpatient basis, stereotactic radiosurgery is painless, and no anesthesia is required for the treatment. Patients are able to return to their daily routine the same day.

Southeast’s Varian® linear accelerator also is equipped with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to precisely shape radiation beams to the contour of the tumor. But Novalis takes IMRT a step further with image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Southeast is the only cancer center in the region to offer IGRT.
