Experts praise precision of Novalis

Joseph P. Miller, M.D., at the Regional Cancer Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital says Novalis sets a new standard of care for patients. He says that by continually shaping the treatment beam to match the size and shape of a patient's tumor from all angles, Novalis ensures that the tumor receives the full-prescription radiation dose while protecting adjacent healthy tissue.

Says, Miller, "With Novalis, the tumor receives the full dose of radiation, but surrounding healthy tissue is protected from the radiation, reducing potential damage to delicate structures such as the brainstem or spinal cord."

Board certified Urologist Gregg S. Hallman, M.D., of Cape Urology Associates, says he has found that for the majority of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer, Novalis can be utilized as a treatment option.

“Most patients today have clinically localized disease and therefore a very good chance of cure,” Dr. Hallman says. Novalis offers many potential advantages to patients, including precision of delivery, decreased side effects in both the long and short term and the ease with which the therapy is delivered. Patients generally tolerate the treatments very well.”

Unlike other institutions that adapt existing equipment to perform stereotactic radiosurgery, Southeast Missouri Hospital chose to make a $3 million commitment to bring the "gold standard" of stereotactic radiosurgery to Cape Girardeau and the Midwest.

Sam Hancock, Ph.D., chief medical physicist at Southeast, says, "We have a state-of-the-art linear accelerator that we could have adapted, but we went a huge step further to add Novalis, which is specifically designed to treat small tumors with exquisite accuracy."
