An Insider's View of Southeast's Novalis Center

World-Class Technology

Area physicians notice the difference when dealing with Southeast Missouri Hosptial's Novalis Center. For one thing, Southeast is the first hospital in Missouri and one of fewer than 60 worldwide to offer Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery, manufactured by BrainLab. Novalis offers cutting-edge technology for highly precise radiation treatments of brain, head and neck tumors, arteriovenous malformations, prostate cancer and certain functional neurological disorders such as triigeminal neuralgia.

Staffing makes the difference

Our Center features a full-time Novalis Coordinator, a full-time Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, two full-time Medical Physicists and a full-time Medical Dosimetrist. Our Radiation Therapy Department has more than 150 years of combined experience in Radiation Therapy. Our staff has received extensive training on Novalis, including hands-on training from Timothy Solberg, Ph.D., who was responsible for installation of the world's first Novalis system at UCLA in 1997. Representatives from our Novalis Team were invited by BrainLab, developers of Novalis, to speak at the International Novalis Conference in Japan in May 2005.

Novalis represents an investment in precise imaging

Southeast Missouri Hospital chose to make the investment in Novalis, which was more than $3 million. Other hospitals may boast of having the ability to offer Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), but are more than likely using the add-on equipment which is about one-tenth of the cost that bolts on to their existing accelerator, says Jayme Carrico, MBA, RT(R) (T) (CT), Director of Radiation Therapy at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
