Diagnostic Radiology Services
at Southeast Missouri Hospital
Southeast’s Radiology Department offers a full scope of diagnostic capabilities, including nuclear medicine, CT scanning, ultrasound, mammography, positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Southeast is the first hospital in this community and one of the first in the region to use a picture archiving communications system (PACS). Southeast’s digital imaging system includes a sophisticated PACS mainframe archiving terminal that receives digital image files from various diagnostic imaging modalities throughout the Hospital including CT, MRI, Ultrasound and traditional x-rays. Those images can be accessed in seconds by radiologists in the Radiology Department, physicians in the Regional Cancer Center or other medical personnel throughout the Hospital on computer work stations capable of displaying those images.

On-line consultation with multiple physicians and the radiologist, with all reviewing the same image, allows for faster diagnosis and initiation of patient care. Southeast’s PACS may also be bridged to off-site physician offices.

PET/CT

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a valuable tool in diagnosing and staging many forms of cancer, and is especially beneficial when used in conjunction with other scanning technologies and diagnostic techniques such as mammography, biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT). Southeast also has available a state-of-the-art PET/CT system, making it possible to collect and combine PET and CT data during a single examination. PET/CT is a valuable tool in diagnosing and staging many forms of cancer.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Southeast now has two MRImaging Centers. In addition to the MRImaging Center located on the ground floor of the Regional Cancer Center, patients now have access to the same state-of-the-art technology at the new Southeast Medical Plaza located on the Hospital campus at 1723 Broadway.

The powerful Siemens Magnetom MRI systems offer a wide array of diagnostic imaging capabilities and with its short, flared chamber is patient friendly. With spectroscopy, Southeast’s MRIs can be used to evaluate tissue, determining whether tissue is simply scar tissue or a more serious tumor regrowth, in many cases eliminating the need for a surgical biopsy.
