Unique 'We Can Weekend' for Cancer Patients

This weekend retreat for cancer patients and their families is held each June at the beautiful Sunnen Center at the YMCA of the Ozarks near Potosi, Missouri. Sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital's Regional Cancer Center, We Can Weekend is a unique experience developed to meet some of the special concerns of families learning to cope with cancer.

“We Can Weekend was first held in 1983 at Cape Girardeau’s historic St. Vincent’s Seminary with a handful of participants. In 2007, its 24th year, 31 patients and their families attended the event, one of only a few in the nation.

Co-sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital and the American Cancer Society, “We Can Weekend” activities include a discussion on understanding cancer; a session to help families with stress management and coping techniques; a session on family dynamics; and a “Look Good, Feel Better” session for female “We Can Weekend” participants. There are special activities tailored to children’s needs and ages. The event also includes a Sunday worship service and recreational activities.
